Chat safely with strangers – how to protect yourself
Chatting safely means deciding for yourself what you share, and using a platform that actively curbs misuse. TalkFlag is a free random chat app for adults 18+ with selfie verification, a new-chat limit and report and block features. Here's how those features work and how you can protect yourself even further.
The safety features in TalkFlag
1. Adults only
TalkFlag is strictly for people aged 18 and over. You confirm your age when you sign up. If someone seems underage, there's a dedicated report reason for that.
2. Selfie verification and the blue checkmark
To get verified, you take a selfie while making a specific gesture. It's checked against your profile. Verified profiles get a blue checkmark. The selfie is used only for the check and is deleted afterwards. With Pro, you can choose to be matched exclusively with verified people.
3. New-chat limit against spam
Everyone can start only a limited number of new chats per hour: 3 on the free plan, 20 with Pro. Existing conversations aren't affected. The limit makes mass spam and bot campaigns practically useless.
4. Report and block
In any chat, you can report a person – for example for spam, harassment, sexual content, a fake profile or because they seem underage. If you like, you can block them at the same time. Reported chats are reviewed by real people, and accounts can be banned for violations.
5. Video only after texting
A video call is only possible once you've messaged each other. You can accept or decline incoming calls. That way, you'll never end up in a video chat with a complete stranger without being asked.

10 rules for chatting safely with strangers
- Don't share your address, phone number or employer in your first conversations.
- Never send money – not even gift card codes, crypto or a “loan”.
- Never share login details or codes, including supposed verification codes sent by text message.
- Don't open links that strangers send you.
- Be careful if someone wants to switch platforms quickly: People who immediately push you to WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram often want to get around the safety features.
- Don't send intimate images. Pictures can be saved and passed on.
- Trust your gut: If something feels off, end the chat.
- Report instead of arguing: Harassers should be reported, not persuaded.
- Video chat only if you want to: You can decline any call.
- Meet in person only with caution: If you ever do meet up, choose a public place and let your friends know.
How to recognize common scams
Scammers tend to follow the same patterns. Once you know them, you won't fall for them:
- Romance scams: Big feelings after just a few messages – and soon an emergency that costs money.
- Investment tips: Suddenly the talk turns to crypto or trading platforms with “guaranteed” profits.
- Sextortion: Someone pressures you for intimate photos or videos and then threatens to publish them. Cut off contact, don't pay, save evidence and report the case.
- Phishing: Links to supposed giveaways or verifications that steal your passwords.
Privacy at TalkFlag
Other users only see your profile – such as your first name, pictures, country and languages. Your email address and phone number are not shown. The verification selfie is deleted after the check. Reported chats may be viewed in order to review the report. You'll find the details in our privacy policy.
The bottom line
There's no such thing as 100% safety online – but good tools and clear rules make all the difference. TalkFlag combines the fun of random chat with an age limit, verification, a new-chat limit and moderation. A healthy gut feeling takes care of the rest.
